The Summer School 360° of EU Affairs offers a unique opportunity to pursue your objectives and build real-world skills. Courses are taught by leading scholars in their fields and the activities offer privileged engagement with EU institutions and high-level practitioners.

In a context where EU affairs continue to expand, the Summer School is meeting the rising demand for professionals in this domain. Students will acquire sought-after knowledge and networks, which will prepare them for careers in a wide range of sectors including the European institutions, government, civil society organisations and academia.

The Summer School is organised by the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) as a collaboration between the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences and the Institute for European Studies (one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the world and a leading centre for the subject). 

Through academic lectures, roundtables and panels with high-level officials and experts in EU affairs, the summer school provides an introduction to EU politics with a focus on EU institutions, interests representation, lobbying, decision-making and the EU in the world. The programme includes lectures and other activities every weekday and covers:

  • The challenges of the EU & Introduction to the politics of the EU
  • The deepening and widening of EU integration process
  • A more (geo)political EU Commission
  • The European Parliament
  • The power of Member States
  • Judicial politics. Rights, norms and values.
  • Interest representation in Brussels: Mapping the actors
  • The EU in the world
  • Decision-making in the EU
  • Normative power vs strategic interest?
  • Negotiating the EU budget

Examples of online social and cultural activities include ice-breakers, a virtual guided visit in Brussels, virtual museums visits, etc.

An innovative pedagogical approach is proposed combining in-depth knowledge in EU studies, learning of new professional skills, networking and mentoring sessions and online social and cultural activities. 

Welcome pack and study material: participants will receive a reader covering all the topics listed in the program. The reader will contain key concepts, boxes, useful links and practical information to go further.

The summer school is designed in a synchronous and interactive format. All activities will take place between 9am and 3pm Brussels time.

Target audience

The summer school is designed for BA (final year) and MA students with a background in political science, law, history, international relations, etc. Participants should have a sufficient command of English to interact and to write assignments.

Practical information

19 - 31 July, 2021

The summer school will be given online through ULB's learning environment. Participants are expected to have a computer and a stable internet connection. 

Registration fee: €1000 (includes lectures, course material, online social and cultural activities).

Participants receive 5 credits upon successful completion of the programme. 
Assessment is based on:

  • active participation (30%)
  • writing of a policy brief (15%)
  • writing of an interview (15%)
  • submission of a final paper after the programme (40%).

Cancellation policy
Cancellation by the participant:
Cancellation before 19 June: 100% of the fee will be refunded
Cancellation between 19 June and 4 July: 50% of the fee will be refunded
Cancellation after 4 July: no refund.

Participants who wish to cancel their registration must send an email to and receive acknowledgement of receipt.
Cancellation requests will be evaluated on a case by case basis by the organisers. All refunds are made in euros by bank transfer. 

Cancellation by the organisers:
If the number of applicants is too low or too high, the organisers reserve the right to cancel the programme or to open waiting lists. If the programme is cancelled by the organisers, the registration fee will be refunded in full.

2. If your application is selected, you will receive the notification of acceptance with the instructions to pay your registration fee. To secure your spot, you will be required to pay your registration fee by bank transfer within one week following the notification of acceptance.
